There Are Two Types of Implants the ADA Considers to Be Safe: Endosteal Implants & Subperiosteal Implants

Have you been considering replacing one or more missing teeth with dental implants? Implants are the next best thing to your natural teeth, offering a durable, incredibly natural looking and feeling restorative solution. The American Dental Association considers endosteal and subperiosteal implants to be safe and effective procedures.

What Are Endosteal Implants?

Endosteal implants are the most common implants used in dentistry. They work well for patients with overall good oral health and bone density. Your implants are titanium tooth root replacements surgically placed into the jawbone. Healing takes about three to six months, during which the implant fuses to the jawbone in a process called osseointegration. We will provide you with temporary restorations to cover your implant while waiting for healing.

After healing is complete, we will attach a post called an abutment to your implant, which acts as a connector to the replacement tooth. Depending on your need, an endosteal implant can support single tooth replacements, bridges, or dentures. The resulting restorations will look, feel, and function just like your natural teeth!

What Are Subperiosteal Implants?

Subperiosteal implants are ideal for patients who suffer from weaker or shallow jawbones that cannot support endosteal implants. In this procedure, instead of placing the titanium implant into the jawbone, a metal frame rests on top of your jawbone, under the gum tissue. The frame has small posts attached to it that extend through the gums to secure artificial teeth. Subperiosteal can provide support for fixed crowns, bridges, or dentures.

Which Implant Procedure Is Right for You?

If you have a healthy jawbone, you are likely an ideal candidate for endosteal implants. However, if you suffer from bone loss, you may want to consider subperiosteal implants instead. Both types of restorations deliver natural-looking, fully functional replacement teeth.
