How Can Oral Piercing Affect My Oral Health?

Over the years, oral piercings have grown in popularity among young men and women. While recognized as a form of self-expression, they carry a risk of serious complications and the potential for long-term health issues. Before having any parts of your mouth pierced, we recommend seeking advice from your trusted team at Avalon Dental Care.

What Are the Risks of Oral Piercings?

The mouth is a moist environment, home to millions of bacteria, which elevates the risk of pain, and serious infection associated with oral piercings. In some cases, the injury created during piercing allows oral bacteria to enter the bloodstream and make their way to the heart, resulting in a condition called endocarditis (inflammation of the heart valves or tissue). Moreover, if a blood vessel is accidentally punctured during piercing, you may experience severe bleeding and significant blood loss.

Oral piercings carry the risk of immediate swelling of the mouth and tongue, which can block your airways and make it hard to breathe. Some patients report a numb tongue, which is usually caused by temporary nerve damage. However, at times the nerve damage can be permanent, which can affect the sense of taste and movement of the mouth.

A common risk of oral piercings is a piece of jewelry breaking off, which poses a choking hazard. Additionally, biting down too hard on the jewelry can chip or fracture a tooth. Patients often have allergic reactions to metal jewelry, and many experience excessive drooling due to increased saliva production.

What Can You Do If You Already Have Oral Piercings?

It’s essential to keep the piercing clean and free of debris by rinsing with mouthwash after every meal. Refrain from clicking the jewelry against your teeth and avoid pushing against the piercing with your tongue. Be mindful of the jewelry’s movement when you talk and chew. Make sure to check the tightness of the jewelry to prevent accidental swallowing or choking. Don’t forget to brush and floss regularly, and to schedule your routine dental exams and cleanings.

Contact Avalon Dental Care or your healthcare provider immediately if you have symptoms of infections, including swelling, pain, fever, chills, or a red streak around the piercing site.
