How Often Should I Change My Toothbrush?

A toothbrush is the first line of defense against the harmful oral bacteria that cause gum disease, tooth decay, and bad breath. It’s important to keep in mind that toothbrushes don’t last forever and will eventually need replacing. Learn more about recognizing the signs that you need to swap your old toothbrush for a new one to keep your smile clean and healthy.

How Often Should You Replace Your Toothbrush?

Most manufacturers and dentists recommend replacing your toothbrush every three to four months, or even sooner if the bristles become frayed, matted, or curl out at the edges. That applies to electric toothbrushes, which also have bristles that wear and require replacing every three months or as soon as you see signs of wear and tear.

If you or a family member are sick, especially with bacterial infections such as strep throat, or if someone accidentally uses your toothbrush, it’s time to replace your toothbrush. Everyone’s mouth harbors different bacteria, so it’s always better to be safe.

How Should You Care for Your Toothbrush?

After brushing your teeth, clean the toothbrush under running water and shake it vigorously. Make sure any toothpaste or food particles are rinsed off and place the toothbrush in an upright toothbrush holder. Avoid contact between toothbrushes of other family members by using different holders or compartments. Never use a closed container to store your toothbrush because that can encourage mold growth or spread bacteria.

Bacteria on toothbrushes are anaerobic, meaning that they cannot survive in the presence of oxygen, so letting your toothbrush air dry will kill most of the bacteria. Many experts recommend alternating between two toothbrushes, so as you use one, the other one has a chance to dry, ensuring that your toothbrushes are free of harmful bacteria when placed in your mouth.
