How Often Do I Need Dental X-Rays?

Dental x-rays allow your trusted team at Avalon Dental Care to detect early signs of dental disease not visible during dental exams. They help us visualize between and inside your teeth and reveal any problems or abnormalities of the tooth roots or the bone surrounding them. Today’s modern x-rays deliver much clearer images and are safer than ever before!

How Often Do You Need Dental X-Rays?

The frequency of dental x-rays required will depend on your age, dental history, oral hygiene practices, and the risk of developing dental disease. In most cases, patients require a series of dental x-rays during their first visit to our practice and once or twice a year from that point on. If any issues surface between dental visits, we may recommend a dental x-ray to diagnose the causes of your concerns.

What Are the Types of Dental X-Rays?

Here are the common types of dental x-rays:

  • Bitewing x-rays, commonly taken during your routine dental visits, help uncover tooth decay and cavities beginning to develop between your teeth and bone loss resulting from periodontal (gum) disease.
  • Periapical x-rays help diagnose cysts or abscesses and also reveal any changes in the tooth roots and surrounding bone.
  • Panoramic x-rays reveal your entire mouth in one image, allowing us to see any impacted teeth, tumors, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems, and much, much more!

Are Dental X-Rays Safe?

Thanks to today’s modern technology, dental x-rays emit an incredibly low level of radiation, minimizing any harmful side effects. Even with the minuscule radiation exposure, our team at Avalon Dental Care only takes x-rays when necessary. We also use every recommended safety protocol, including using protective lead aprons. Your safety and wellbeing are always our top priorities!

How Can You Keep X-Rays to a Minimum?

The best way to minimize your need for dental x-rays is to keep your teeth and gums in tip-top shape. We recommend a diligent oral health routine, including daily brushing and flossing. Don’t forget to schedule your twice-a-year dental exams to maintain your oral health. The healthier your mouth is, the fewer dental x-rays you’ll require.
