What Can I Expect During a Dental Cleaning?

Routine dental cleanings are an important cornerstone of preventive care, reducing the risk of tooth decay, periodontal (gum) disease, and a host of oral health concerns. At Avalon Dental Care, we believe in prevention as the best approach rather than treating dental problems after they develop. So, if you haven’t had your teeth cleaned in the past six months, we invite you to schedule an appointment today!

How Often Should You Schedule Your Dental Cleaning Appointments?

Most dental professionals recommend scheduling dental exams and cleanings every six months to help you maintain healthy teeth and gums. If, however, you have gum inflammation and infection or if you are at a higher risk of developing tooth decay and cavities, we may recommend more frequent professional cleanings to maintain your oral health.

What Happens During Your Routine Dental Cleaning Appointment?

If you have healthy gums and teeth, you will require a regular dental cleaning, also known as dental prophylaxis. Our dental hygienist will use an instrument known as an ultrasonic scaler for quicker and more comfortable care. The innovative device uses sound waves to blast away plaque and tartar buildup as well as surface tooth stains. We may also use our cutting-edge laser to break up plaque or tartar deposits with minimal swelling or discomfort.

After removing plaque and tartar that have built up on and below your gum line, our dental hygienist will use a gritty polisher to remove any remaining surface stains. We will also floss between your teeth to remove any remaining food debris or plaque. The last step is a fluoride treatment to help keep tooth decay and cavities at bay. Twice-yearly dental cleanings have been shown to lower your risk of tooth decay, periodontal disease, bad breath, infections, and a host of oral health concerns.

What Is a Deep Dental Cleaning?

If you have periodontal disease, you will require a deep dental cleaning, a procedure known as scaling and root planing. The non-surgical gum disease treatment begins with using our ultrasonic scaler to remove plaque and tartar from along and under your gum line. Root planing, on the other hand, involves cleaning your tooth root surfaces and smoothing them out to promote healing and gum tissue reattachment.

Laser therapy following your cleaning helps decontaminate your gingival pockets, where bacteria flourish, helping combat the infection right at its source. Deep dental cleanings have been shown to reverse gingivitis, the earliest stage of gum disease, and halt the progression of periodontal disease. After your scaling and root planing procedure, we may recommend more frequent cleanings, usually every 3-4 months, to maintain your gum health.
