Is Nitrous Oxide Sedation Safe?

Does the thought of stepping into a dentist’s office make you tense up with fear? Dental Sedation has advanced considerably and now offers several safe options for patients who suffer from dental anxiety. Many people are so phobic of dental procedures that they’d prefer to put up with pain, rather than seek the help they need. Nitrous oxide, also referred to as laughing gas, is an option your dentist may offer you to alleviate your anxiety and to make you comfortable during dental procedures.

How Does Nitrous Oxide Sedation Work?

You will receive nitrous oxide combined with oxygen through a mask placed over your nose. Your dentist will ask you to breathe like you normally would, and you will soon start feeling the effects of the nitrous oxide. You may feel light-headed, or a have a tingling sensation in your arms and legs. You will remain conscious and will be able to hear your dentist and respond to directions.

Nitrous oxide helps you stay calm and relaxed. Your dentist has control of the amount of gas administered. The effects of the sedation tend to wear off quickly after removing the mask. You can even drive home safely after your procedure.

Is it Safe?

The combination of nitrous oxide and oxygen delivered through a mask has been shown to be a safe and effective approach to manage pain and dental anxiety in patients, including children. During sedation, nitrous oxide delivery systems limit delivery to a maximum of 70% nitrous oxide and 30% oxygen, which helps to ensure that the patient is receiving at least 9% more oxygen than found in the air.

There are at least 12 audio and visual safety features that help avoid any adverse events during administration. In the unlikely event that any of the safety features fail, your dentist will remove your mask to allow you to breathe room air.
