How to Protect Tooth Enamel from Erosion

Did you know that tooth enamel is the hardest and strongest substance in your body? Enamel encases the crown, which is the visible portion of the tooth, providing protection from wear. Preventing tooth enamel erosion will help ensure you maintain a healthy smile for years to come.

The Importance of Tooth Enamel

Your enamel protects your teeth from damage due to chewing, biting, and grinding. It shields them from extreme temperatures and fends off chemicals and acids that can harm your teeth. Erosion is the irreversible loss of enamel, which leaves you susceptible to developing tooth decay and sensitivity.

What Causes Tooth Enamel Erosion?

Tooth enamel erosion can occur due to factors including the consumption of sugary or acidic foods or beverages. Some oral or health conditions also contribute to enamel erosion, including dry mouth, a misaligned bite, acid reflux disease (GERD), gastrointestinal problems, and eating disorders, especially bulimia. Additional factors include brushing too hard, improper flossing, biting down on hard objects, or grinding your teeth, a condition known as bruxism.

Preventing Tooth Erosion

It’s important to limit the consumption of acidic foods and beverages such as sodas, citruses, and juices. If you have an acidic drink, use a straw to bypass the teeth and make sure to rinse your mouth right after. It’s a good idea to wrap up your meal with a glass of milk or some cheese to neutralize the acids. Drink lots of water, especially if you have dry mouth. Consider chewing sugar-free gum, as it reduces the amount of acid in your mouth and helps you produce more saliva, which strengthens your teeth.

Make sure to brush at least an hour after you’ve had acidic foods or drinks because they soften the enamel, leaving it more prone to damage. Also, make sure you use fluoride toothpaste and avoid brushing too hard. Seek treatment if you have conditions such as bulimia, alcoholism, or acid reflux disease. If you grind your teeth in your sleep, a mouthguard can help protect your tooth enamel.
