How to Recognize the Warning Signs of Gum Disease

Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy smile. Poor gum health can seriously impact your oral health and overall well-being. Recognizing the early signs of gum disease will ensure prompt treatment, providing the best possible outcomes for your smile. At Avalon Dental Care, we strive to empower our patients through preventative dentistry and personalized periodontal care to protect their smiles and overall health.

What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a serious infection that affects the structures that hold teeth in place, including the gum tissues, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone. It begins as gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums, which, without treatment, can progress and cause bone loss, loose teeth, and even tooth loss. The bacteria causing gum disease can potentially spread to other parts of the body, affecting organs such as the lungs and heart.

What Are the Causes of Gum Disease?

Gum disease usually develops as a result of poor oral hygiene. If plaque is not removed through regular brushing, flossing, and routine dental cleanings, it can build up on the gum line, leading to inflammation. Risk factors for gum disease also include smoking, family history, a compromised immune system, hormonal changes, or certain medications, such as those that cause dry mouth.

Recognizing the Signs of Gum Disease

Healthy gums are typically firm and pink and fit snugly around your teeth. The following are warning signs of gum disease requiring immediate care:

  • Bleeding gums when brushing or flossing
  • Red, swollen, or tender gums
  • Persistent bad breath
  • A bad taste in the mouth
  • Pain when chewing
  • Receding gums or teeth that appear longer
  • Pus between the teeth and gums
  • Changes in how the teeth fit together
  • Loose teeth or tooth loss

How Is Gum Disease Treated?

The following are some gum disease treatments we offer:

Scaling and Root Planing: The first line of treatment is a deep cleaning known as scaling and root planing. Scaling involves the removal of plaque and tartar buildup from the teeth and gum line, while root planing helps smooth the tooth root surfaces, promoting healing and gum tissue reattachment. Deep dental cleanings can often reverse gingivitis, restoring your gum health. If the condition has advanced to periodontitis, scaling and root planing will help prevent further damage to your gums and structures supporting your teeth.

ARESTIN: In some cases, we may recommend antibiotic treatment using ARESTIN after scaling and root planing. We place the medicated powder directly into the infected gum pockets to target and eliminate gum disease-causing bacteria at their source, controlling the infection and promoting healing.

Perio Protect: This non-surgical treatment for gum disease involves the delivery of a medicated gel directly to the affected areas of the gum through custom-fitted trays. You’ll wear your trays at home for a short period each day to reduce inflammation, kill bacteria, and promote gum healing.

Periodontal Maintenance: We typically recommend dental maintenance visits every 3-4 months after gum disease treatment. Our dedicated team will evaluate your gums, clean your teeth, and intervene, if needed, to maintain your gum health. An essential component of periodontal maintenance is to practice meticulous home oral hygiene care, including regular brushing and flossing.
