What Can I Do If I Lose My Filling or Crown?

July 11th, 2019

While losing a dental crown or filling is uncommon, it can happen when you least expect. Knowing the steps to take to protect your affected tooth will help avoid complications down the road. In the event that a crown or filling falls out, make sure to contact Avalon Dental Care immediately for an appointment during which we will restore your tooth and your bright and healthy smile.

Caring for a Lost Filling or Crown

Remove The Filling or Crown and Store Safely

Your crown or filling can be easily and quickly reattached with minimal discomfort. The first step to take is removing your dislodged restoration from your mouth and placing it in a safe place to avoid accidentally swallowing it. If swallowed, there’s no reason to panic because your crown or restoration usually passes without causing any problems.

Call Avalon Dental Care for an Appointment

After removing the crown or filling from your mouth, contact Avalon Dental Care emergency dental care. We will determine whether we can use your restoration or if you need a new one made. While waiting for your appointment, the following steps will help protect your exposed tooth.

Keep the Area Clean

Make sure you keep the area clean. Gently brush around and inside your affected tooth to remove any food debris. You may want to rinse your mouth with warm salt water after eating.

Use Temporary Dental Cement

If you can’t make it to our office right away, consider using over-the-counter dental cement to reattach your crown or filling to protect your tooth from bacteria exposure. Make sure to clean the inside of your restoration along with the affected tooth, and coat it with the adhesive, then place your crown or filling in place. Never use any household or super glue to avoid damaging your tooth and your restoration. Another option is to place dental wax over your tooth to provide protection by acting as a temporary barrier.
