We at Avalon Dental Care offer sedation dentistry to help alleviate your fears and to make your visits pleasant and stress-free. You can trust that your comfort and safety are our primary concerns!
What Is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry a process used to establish a relaxed and calm state through the use of sedatives to provide anxiety-free dental treatments. It enables patients fearful of going to the dentist to receive the needed care without the apprehension known as dental phobia. In most cases, sedated patients are relaxed but conscious throughout the procedure, except those under general anesthesia.
Types of Sedation
Inhaled minimal sedation involves you breathing nitrous oxide, otherwise known as laughing gas combined with oxygen through a mask. It works to keep you relaxed throughout your dental procedure and tends to wear off quickly, leaving you able to drive home after treatment.
Oral sedation can vary from minimal to moderate, depending on the dose you receive. For minimal sedation, you usually take a pill about an hour before your procedure. The tablet will make you drowsy, but you’ll still be awake. Moderate sedation requires a higher dose of medication. Some patients feel groggy enough to sleep, but can usually be awakened easily. IV moderate sedation, on the other hand, delivers the sedative through a vein, so its effects are apparent quicker.
Deep sedation and general anesthesia involve receiving medications that will make you sleep deeply during the procedure. Regardless of the type of sedation you choose, you’ll likely also need a local anesthetic to relieve any pain or discomfort.
