How Do Dental Implants Work?

November 15th, 2017

Have you wondered what it would be like to have natural looking teeth once again? If the thought using dentures for the rest of your life makes you uneasy, you’ll be happy to know that that there are options available. If you are looking for tooth restoration that looks, feels, and functions just like your natural teeth, dental implants may be the cosmetic and practical solution for you.

What Is the Procedure?

Placing a dental implant usually involves several steps. First, your dentist will surgically plant a post made of titanium into your jawbone. As you heal, the implant will osseointegrate, or in other words fuse with, the natural jawbone, creating a sound foundation for your replacement teeth.

In the next step, a small connector called an abutment is placed on top of your dental implant to connect the replacement teeth. The final stage is attaching your replacement teeth, or custom made crowns to the abutment, resulting in teeth that look and function like the original ones.

What Are the Benefits of Dental Implants?

You will not find a better or longer lasting option to restoring your missing teeth than dental implants. You will enjoy teeth that feel and function just like natural ones, and most importantly, no one will be able to tell that they are not your natural teeth. You will undergo regular dental hygiene such as brushing, flossing, and visiting your dentist for checkups and cleanings.

What Type of Implants Are Available?

There are several types of implants available. The most commonly used ones are endosteal implants, which are titanium dental implants shaped like small screws, placed in your jawbone. Subperiosteal implants are placed under your gum, on or above your jawbone. These dental implants are ideal for patients who have shallow jawbones and want to avoid undergoing bone rebuilding procedures.
